Our 2018-2019 activities have largely focused in four areas:

  1. Deepening Ball State’s involvement in city, county, and regional initiatives;
  2. Strengthening the culture of community engagement across the university;
  3. Connecting to networks of community-engaged institutions across the nation; and
  4. Celebrating campus and community successes.

Neighborhood Association Organization Guide

This workbook has been prepared for Muncie’s neighborhood organizers under the direction of: Muncie Action Plan’s (MAP) Task Force 2 Initiative and the Building Better Neighborhoods (BBN) program in Ball State University’s Office of Community Engagement.

The following information is based on publicly available information, and the activities of current Muncie neighborhood associations.

In this workbook, you will find a guide to forming and maintaining a neighborhood association, sections addressing issues and challenges faced by neighborhood organizers, and a collection of ideas and resources.

St. Vincent de Paul Society Updates Muncie Resource Guide

thriftstorefrontThe St. Vincent de Paul Society of Muncie has published a comprehensive guide to human services available in Muncie and Delaware County. The guide, more than 100 pages long and meant to supplement the 211 Rainbow book, lists resources for basic needs – such as utilities, food, and shelter – as well as children’s services, disability services, senior services, and more.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society is a worldwide Catholic community organization founded in Paris in 1833. Locally, the tri-parish group serves the needy of Delaware County to fulfill two great commandments – Love of God and Love of Neighbor. The society operates a thrift store (920 E. Charles Street) that helps approximately 550 persons per year with free clothing and miscellaneous household items. Proceeds from the store go to help with rent, utilities, and food for those in need.

“We have found this resource highly useful when working with our clients,” said Angela Saval, member of the society. “There are services that we cannot provide, but there are many other resources in the community.”

The resource book is updated on a bi-yearly basis. An online version of the resource book is available for free, although the society welcomes donations to support their efforts.

Hard copies of the guide may be purchased for $12. Orders must be submitted to svdpmuncie@gmail.com by February 7.

Neighborhood Gardens

Gardens can be a great way to beautify your neighborhood, mitigate small scale flooding and drainage issues, and even produce fresh food for the community.

Gardens in Muncie

The Muncie Urban Garden Initiative (UGI) networks resources and community engagement to encourage more local urban food production. Gardens in the UGI network cover 1.75 acres across Muncie; these do not include hundreds of backyard gardens that are in production as well.

UGI has many resources for potential gardeners, including a Facebook page, books, tools, rototiller, straw, compost, seeds, plants, and experienced gardeners to educate. If your neighborhood, church, school, or business.

Muncie also has an Urban Garden Committee.  They have compiled a map of urban garden resources that you can view here.

Rain Gardens

Rain gardens are shallow landscaped area that collects rain water from roofs, driveways, sidewalks and lawns and filters it through soil and plants before it enters storm drains or streams.

Stormwater Educator Jason Donati from the Muncie Sanitary District created a presentation on creating your own rain garden: “Going Green with Rain Barrels and Rain Gardens.”
